Church and Convent of La Compañía de Jesús
|
The structure was formed by a school, a temple, and a convent. The construction of the temple was under the supervision of Superior Master Jose de Porres and the school, funded in 1852 is attributed to architect Francisco Fernandez Fuentes. Great part of these buildings was destroyed by the earthquake in 1695, but it was rebuilt later. In 1767 the Jesuits were forced to leave the country therefore the facilities were abandoned and occupied by a textile factory until 1865. Later on, public offices and the municipal market were located there. Currently the training center for the Spanish cooperation operates here. This is one of the few buildings showing painted murals, as part of the ornamentation, which can still be appreciated on the main façade of the temple. |
