La Antigua , originally called Santiago de los Caballeros, owed its name to Santiago (St. James), the Older Apostle. Its Patron Saint day is celebrated on July 25 th , the date on which the city was founded in 1524. The date is celebrated with parades, dances, as well as other civil and religious celebrations.
