Guatemala is one of the countries in the region where spoken Spanish is less stressed; therefore, many people consider this an ideal place to learn the language. The city of Antigua is a worldwide-renowned linguistic center. Its personalized teaching approach and the quiet environment inside the city offer an opportunity for many people of different ages and occupations from all over the world to learn Spanish. There are more than 75 Spanish Schools duly authorized and supervised by the Ministry of Education. The method used consists of full immersion in the language with personal lessons taught on a one-to-one basis. Students are also afforded opportunities for dynamic activities where no other language other than Spanish is spoken. Those activities include tours to different tourist areas in the country, dance lessons, lectures, films, singing lessons, guided readings, Guatemalan cooking lessons, sports events, social work, etc. These will vary depending upon the school attended. There are also lodging options, such as being as a guest in an Antiguan family home, (in order to practice the language in everyday life), or staying in a hotel or an apartment for privacy. School schedules vary between four and eight hours a day, which can be tailored to the students' needs. Learning levels will vary depending upon student goals- whether a student wants to learn a language for academic purposes, job requirements, or communication in order to manage the tourist sites in the area. The choices offered by the Spanish Schools are many and are based on different needs, budgets, and the time available for the both the learning process and one's stay in the country. Stop by the different schools and ask for information about the methods and the teachers available at the school in order to evaluate which best fits your needs. |
