During the XVI century, the art form of sculpture flourished in Guatemala . Usually the images were those of a religious nature, such as Christ, Mary, and important Saints. It is said that the forms were so perfect that they even inspired the less devout. Thus Guatemala became the center of the manufacturing and exportation of sculptures for other cities in the Capitan í a General. In fact, the sculptures were in such great demand that there were not enough artists to fulfill the demands for images. After the capital was moved to Nueva Guatemala ( Guatemala City ) following the earthquakes of 1773, many of the original images as well as retables were relocated to the new capital. However, some have subsequently returned to their original settings after they were rebuilt. Still others remain in museums or in private collections. During Holy Week, the most important of these sculptures are carried throughout the streets on decorated andas. In the Museo Colonial (Old building of the University of San Carlos ), you are able to view examples of this art form. However, in order to appreciate fully the mystic atmosphere of La Antigua , do not miss visiting the churches of La Merced , Escuela de Cristo, San Francisco , and the Cathedral. For there you will see sculptures in their original settings surrounded by the beauty of the churches and the atmosphere of the truly devoted.
